The NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People), is the oldest, largest, and strongest civil rights organization in the United States. Formed in 1909 in New York City, the NAACP now covers all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Japan, and Germany. The NAACP is a network of more than 2,200 branches divided into seven regions and managed and governed by a National Board of Directors. It is The LARGEST and the OLDEST, the BADDEST and the BOLDEST, the MOST LOVED and MOST HATED, the MOST FEARED and MOST REVERED, the MOST CUSSED and the MOST DISCUSSED Civil Rights Organization in America.
The Alexandria Branch, branch #7403, was founded in 1934. The Alexandria Branch is the most award-winning branch in Virginia. It has been recognized several times at the NAACP National Convention for outstanding program activities, which have given the Branch nine Thalheimer Awards. The Thalheimer Awards, given annually since 1944, are presented to NAACP branches considered to have contributed the most during any one-year to the advancement of the Association's programs. The Branch has also received outstanding program awards for its community involvement for the Virginia, Maryland, and Washington D.C. Region, Region #7.
